The Correct Way to Hold Your Glass

Walk into any bar or wine lounge and you'll see a variety of people holding their wine glasses in several different ways. Although there's no way to significantly harm the taste of your wine by holding it in an incorrect fashion, there is definitely an optimal way to grip that glass whether you're drinking red or white.

Basically, all you want to do is grab that stem and hold on! The proper way to drink wine is to firmly grasp the the long stem of the glass from the swirl to the sip with your fingers. By holding the stem, swirling is a much easier task than if you're cradling the bowl or have the top of the glass secured in a vice grip.

Want more reasons to stay away from the top of your wine glass? Well, if your fingers are on the greasy side, you'll smudge up the crystal and make your glass look downright ugly. But the most important reason to hold the glass by the stem is to avoid contact with the wine because your body heat will adversely affect its temperature. Serving wine at the right temperature is key to maximizing its potential, so heating it up with your hand is something you'll want to avoid.

Now, you might be asking yourself about this new, modern wine glasses that have no stems such as all of these options at Wine Enthusiast. Honestly, we don't like these types of glasses at all, and you'll never find them at any fine restaurants. They're different and serve as nice conversation pieces, but beyond that we'll always prefer the traditional style.

So, just remember this simple advice when it comes to holding your wine glass: the stem is your friend!
