Don't Smell the Cork |
|||
|
When you order a bottle of wine at a restaurant, the server or sommelier should always present
you with the cork before pouring. In the past, many supposed wine connoisseurs unleashed a big
sniff of the cork in an attempt to discern something about the wine's qualities. This is actually
a complete waste of time. Smelling the cork will tell you nothing - save your smelling efforts for the actual wine that will be poured into your glass momentarily, for that will tell you infinitely more about what you're going to get. There's really nothing for you to do with the cork unless you like to collect them. In fact, we have a large square glass vase filled with corks from all kinds of different bottles - makes a terrific decorative conversation piece and reminds you of all the amazing wines you've enjoyed over the years. |
