Sommelier Freebies

Who doesn't enjoy getting free stuff? We know that we certainly do. And being the big wine lovers that we are, nothing's better than getting served up some free wine.

We've been lucky enough to become friends and associates with many sommeliers from a variety of restaurants, and with those relationships you will more often than not be taken care of.

However, one several occasions we've been treated to a free glass of Chenin Blanc with our appetizers or a lovely late harvest Riesling with dessert by a sommelier we've never met before. How? The secret is really all about showing the sommelier a littel bit of unique wine knowledge.

This might sound a bit harsh, but sommeliers really don't want to "waste" free wine on a group that won't truly appreciate it. If you can show the sommelier that you have some advanced knowledge, you've got a decent shot. Now, a lot of sommeliers won't give you anything, so you should definitely never expect to get freebies. But, if you put yourself in the right position, you've got a shot.

So, how do you show that you've got some wine smarts swirling around in that head of yours? You don't want to come off as a wannabe sommelier spouting off a bunch of pretentious nonsense like you're heading some sort of lecture. Instead, engage the sommelier in conversation about your favorite wines, what your tastes are and what you've enjoyed in the past. Asking questions is a major plus. Engage the sommelier, show that you know your stuff (to a degree) and you might be treated to some of those oh so great freebies.
