Every Wine is Noteworthy

This article doesn't mean that every wine you drink is good or worth remembering so you can drink it again. Instead, what we're talking about here is the importance of taking notes about the wine that you drink. Notes come in handy for helping to remember what you've had in the past, and even more importantly what you have liked or loved so that you can order something similar in the future.

Picture this: you go out to dinner and the sommelier suggests something you've never tried before with a crazy name, and it's the best white wine you've ever had. The next day, you're racking your brain trying to remember the name, but you're drawing a blank. Wouldn't it be great if you wrote down Gewürztraminer, plus all of the details of the bottle so you could purchase it again?

There are a few ways to take wine notes. First, you can find many small wine journals such as this one or these little guys that can easily be toted along to dinner or a tasting and pulled out when the time is right. Or, if you've got a good memory, you can wait to get home and record your thoughts into something larger and more grandiose like this beauty so that you look extra important when you're writing.

As for us, we prefer going digital for our notes - no need for a pencil when you've got a cell phone handy. Some people might give you a dirty look thinking that you're text messaging a friend in the middle of a fine meal, but don't mind them. Much more important that you're recording your wine notes while the bouquet and flavors are fresh in your mind (and while the bottle is in front of you so you can record its particulars).

In terms of what kind of notes you should be taking, we keep things simple and succinct. We start with the type of the wine and the vintage. Next, we record where we drank the wine, the occasion and how much we paid. And finally, the good stuff: the aromas, the flavors, the balance/structure and the length of the finish. Of course, complete your notes with your overall satisfaction with and enjoyment of the wine.
