Don't Be Afraid of the Sommelier |
|||
|
This may sound like an overly simple article, but we can't tell you how many friends
and associates we know who really enjoy wine that are just scared to death of asking for the
sommelier's help in choosing a wine. There seems to be a couple of reasons for this. One, people
don't want to be perceived as wine amateurs or worse in front of the "expert." Two, people don't
want to look cheap because they'll be ordering a bottle on the less expensive side of the wine menu. The sommelier's sole purpose is to find you the perfect wine for your occasion, regardless of price, taste or level of knowledge. A good sommelier will never judge, and we have yet to run into one that has shown even a hint of negativity. Sommeliers are all about helping you enjoy wine more. If you want to be adventurous, they're amazing resources that can find you a bottle that might become your new favorite. If you want the tried-and-true, they can steer you to something similar if you can't find what you're used to. It's not always necessary to use the sommelier if you find a bottle on a menu that you know you want. But if the wine list is big or if you haven't heard of a vast majority of the choices, they're life savers. Additionally, they're fantastic for knowing the wines on a menu that constitute great value, as well as the top vintages. And they'll also steer you away from wines that are overpriced if they're doing their job right. When it comes to getting the most bang for your buck, the sommelier is absolutely your best resource. Bottom line: use the sommelier! Oh, and another note... if the sommelier hooks you up with a great wine, you should throw him/her a little extra. Sure, they're paid to help you and don't expect to be tipped like your server does, but it's always nice to give them a tip if they've picked you a winner. |
