Don't Bother With the Water Swirl |
When you're at a tasting table, you will almost always find a pitcher of water next to the pour
bucket that the vast majority of tasters will use to rinse out their glasses before proceeding
to the next wine. Basically, this common practice is useless and you shouldn't bother. It can help get rid of the residual red in a glass so that your next glass of white doesn't turn into a frankenstein rosé, but to truly extinguish the hint of the previous wine from your glass, ask the pourer to "prime" your glass with the wine you'll be trying next. Swirling with water is just not nearly as effective at eliminating the residual wine from your glass as what a small amount of the next wine can. So, if starting anew with every wine is a top priority when you taste, remember to go "prime" time. |
