Planning a Tasting Trip

Going on a wine tasting trip is a fantastic way to have fun and discover new wines that could become your new favorites. We highly recommend going on tasting trips to expand your knowledge and appreciation of not just the flavor and taste of wine but also the painstaking effort that goes into creating the magical juice that we all love so much. Now, in order to get the most of your trip, we've got a couple of suggestions that should help.

Our first big tip is to put in the effort up front to plan out the wineries that you want to see and which wines you want to taste. Many wineries offer tastings by appointment only, so if you just drive up you might not be able to do their tasting, even if they're open. This is especially true of the more popular wineries. Other wineries can have unusual hours, so knowing when they're open is obviously important.

In big winemaking regions such as Napa, there are a crazy amount of wineries to choose from. It's very helpful to either purchase books or request materials online to learn more about what each winery has to offer. You'll want to know how many wines you'll have a chance to taste, how much you'll have to pay, and if you'll have an opportunity to take a tour.

In terms of the number of wineries to visit in a day, the rule of thumb is a maximum of five (5). Why? After the fifth, you really won't be tasting anything different at the sixth. Now, if you're not drunk yet and you want to finish the proverbial job, feel free to keep going. But if you're really interested in the wine, max out at five.

Our second big tip is get a ride! We can't stress enough how much more enjoyable your trip will be having a driver take you from one winery to the next. Many wineries are difficult to find on these little back roads, so navigating can be incredibly frustrating. Who wants to fight over bad directions when you should be chilling and enjoying the wine? Even with a map or a GPS, your chances of getting lost in wine country or being unable to find certain wineries are pretty decent.

Of course, the other important reason to get a driver is the alcohol factor. No matter how high your tolerance is, a day of tasting will impair you, and driving drunk is something you absolutely want to avoid for many reasons.

You will find a mulititude of car and limousine companies that cater to wine country vacationers. For the most part, their prices will all be around the same neighborhood.

And, speaking of limo companies, if you're heading to Napa or Sonoma for a wine tasting vacation, we highly recommend Napa Valley Limo.
