Converting the Non-Drinker

Every wine drinker has a friend that isn't into wine for whatever reason, ordering up a cold brew, a vodka tonic or a mojito. Perhaps the friend had a harsh and probably cheap red wine and was forever scarred, or maybe it's just a case of taking sips here and there but never enjoying anything enough to actually order a glass. This article will give you a strategy and some suggestions on wines to break through and turn that friend into a fellow wine drinker.

Our first piece of advice might seem a bit obvious, but you should start by assuming that your friend doesn't like wine because s/he has only consumed absolutely crappy wine, and that's why the friend has formed a negative opinion. Many people are first exposed to garbage like box wine or the cheapie bottles that collegians often drink, so no wonder they don't like wine.

This leads to a simple initial step: order yourself a wine that you know is good, and then have your friend try it. By exposing a non-drinker to quality, obviously your chances of converting them go way up.

Now, there's still a decent shot that this first strategy won't work, especially if your favorite wines are big, stout reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah. You could order a thousand dollar bottle of Bordeaux and serve it up because you know its one of the finest wines in the world, but wine like that would probably put one heck of a funny look on your friend's face.

So, it's absolutely essential that you choose a quality wine in a fruit-forward, more palette friendly varietal for this all important taste by your friend. What do we suggest? For anyone who doesn't drink wine at all, you should definitely go with white. What kind of white? Stay away from Sauvignon Blanc and its herbaceous nature; not a good starter wine at all. We recommend going with a Kabinett Riesling if your friend might like a little sweetness, or a Pinot Grigio for its crisp, fruity neutrality. Either of those are excellent wines with training wheels.

And although we haven't had one in a long time, inexpensive White Zinfandel is probably the ultimate starter wine. Ordering one of these cheapies breaks our first rules of purchasing a quality wine, but since it tastes more like fruit punch or a wine cooler, White Zin can be the one that breaks down that wall. Just remember not to abandon your friend and get them out of White Zin mode somewhere down the road. And White Zin is cheap enough so just buy your friend his/her own glass and get yourself a glass of something better.

One final tip: have your friend try wine with food, because that's really where wine differentiates itself from beer and cocktails, which don't get tastier with food and don't enhance the flavor of food. If your non-drinking friend can't drink a glass of red by itself, give that friend a small pour out of the bottle you're enjoying, and then instruct said friend to take a sip immediately after taking a bite. The amazing combination of food and wine (just make sure they pair up OK) might turn the tide almost instantly.

OK, you've got the strategy and we assume you've got the non-drinking friend out there. Now, go do some good and together we'll create another wine lover!
